My research examines the houses of parliament in the aftermath of the 1834 fire, which destroyed the old Palace of Westminster. In particular, I am interested the temporary houses of parliament and the way in which the reduced space affected the way in which parliament functioned. The ruins of St Stephen’s Chapel, subsequent temporary accommodation and St Stephen’s Hall provide an interesting case study of the changes to the Palace of Westminster in the mid-nineteenth century, particularly in connection to the changing functions of space during this period.
